George W Hatton circa 1920

George W Hatton is the grandson of Horace Hatton and Anna Rutan and the son of Edward Hatton, he was born in Ohio 23 January 1902. The date of his birth is recorded in the United States Social Security Death Index and the California Death Index.

George Hatton's mother, Mary Hughes, and father, Edward G Hatton, were married on 22 March 1898 in Harrison County, Ohio. His older sister Hazel M Hatton was born later that year on 4 December 1898 in New Athens, Harrison, Ohio. Apparently Edward and Mary Hatton were separated as the 1900 US Census shows Mary living with her parents, Joseph and Margaret Hughes and her daughter Hazel in Athens Township. Mary is enumerated as Mary Hughes in the 1900 US Census, not Mary Hatton.

Edward G Hatton and Mary Hughes reunited in some capacity as their son George W Hatton was born on 23 January 1902. As he bears the surname Hatton, he must be the son of Edward G Hatton the husband of Mary Hughes and father of George's sister Hazel. No birth record has been located, but the California Death Index for George W Hatton does record his mother's maiden name as Hughes.

Edward G Hatton and Mary Hughes, parents of Hazel and George, are divorced by late 1903 as Edward G Hatton is married for the second time to Martha Cooksey on 11 November 1903 in Tuscarawas, Ohio. Edward would marry a third time in 1907. Edward G Hatton married Emma Martin in Newark, Ohio on 18 November 1907.

Mary Hughes eventually remarried as well. Mary Hughes Hatton is now Mary M Schell and is living in Forward, Butler County, Pennsylvania in 1910 with husband Clarence E Schell, daughter Hazel age eleven and son George W Hatton age eight as recorded in the 1910 US Census.

Hazel M Hatton was married at age nineteen to Evert Bray O Ross. They were married 30 January 1918 in Wellsburg, Brooke County, West Virginia.

By 1920 Mary Hughes Hatton Schell has three children with her second husband Clarence E Schell. The 1920 US Census enumerates the Schell family living in Butler County Pennsylvania. George W Hatton is living with three half siblings, Edith, Raymond, and Robert Schell. Clarence Schell is employed as a mail carrier and George W Hatton (enumerated as George Schell in the 1920 US Census) at age eighteen is working in a carworks.

Sometime between 1920 and 1930 Clarence E Schell and Mary M Hughes Hatton Schell were divorced. Clarence is enumerated in the 1930 US Census living with seventeen year old son Robert Schell and his marriage status is divorced. There is no further record of Mary Hughes in vital records or census records.

George W Hatton has moved back to Ohio by 1930 as he is enumerated in the 1930 US Census as a mechanic employed at a garage, living in Canton, Ohio. George is living with his half sister Edith and her husband Albert Garth Mackey, they have a baby daughter Dorothy Mackey.

On 5 December 1936 George W Hatton was married to Martha Alice Aley in Hancock, West Virginia. The marriage record has  George Hatton born in Harrison County Ohio. The residences listed for the bride and groom on the marriage document match the locations found for their place of residence in 1935 as noted in the 1940 US Census for George and Martha Hatton. George and Martha are living in Canton, Ohio with Martha's widowed mother in 1940 and George is working as a mechanic in a metal parts factory.

There are no documents available today that record any descendants of George W Hatton.

Apparently there is a family story and an engagement announcement that has George W Hatton engaged to a Miss Minnie Irma Wright in the early 1920's. Minnie Irma Wright had a daughter named Margaret who was put up for adoption. There is also a contemporaneous letter from Minnie to an uncle referencing the child Margaret. Wright family history has it that Minnie's father did not approve of the match between Minnie Irma Wright and George W Hatton. There is no evidence that the marriage ever took place and the Wright family does not know if George Hatton was the father of Minnie Irma Wright's daughter Margaret. This information is found in notes on the Wright family tree on Ancestry along with a photo of George Hatton and Minnie Irma Wright.
